His Table

After partaking in Holy Communion this past Sunday, the Word “Table” resonated as spiritually significant.  As I began to study the Word, I discovered some amazing things.

In Psalm 23:5 David mentions how the Lord sets a “Table” before him in the presence of his enemies”. In Exodus 25:30 the Lord says, “And you shall set the Bread of the Presence (Showbread) on the “table” before Me, continually. Finally, in Revelation 19: 9 but not exclusively, there’s a table in heaven prepared for the Lamb’s Wedding Feast.

In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for “Table” (Shulchan) in the above context means – to spread out, usually displaying items or conducting business. In both domestic and religious settings it symbolized fellowship, hospitality and provision. It was also considered an occasion where friends and family gathered together for a meal.

To David the table was God’s provision and protection while he fled from his enemy (Saul). As he sought refuge with the Priests, he and his men ate from the table of showbread, the bread freshly baked.
(1 Samuel 21: 1-6)

In the New Testament, the Greek word for “Table” (trapeza) means a table for food or banqueting or money-changing- business. It can also imply a place of fellowship, communion, and metaphorically a place of provision and abundance.

It certainly was not an event where you would invite your enemy. Yet, on that fateful night Jesus set before His disciples in the presence of even His betrayer His plan for their salvation through His sacrifice.  (John 13:26)

In every example the table translates to the Lord’s provision for all who believe. On the cross the Body of Jesus was spread out for all to see. With arms wide open Jesus was saying, “Come to Me”,  inviting everyone to His table of divine fellowship.

His Promise: “Behold I stand at the door and knock, if anyone hears my voice and opens the door,  I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”  Revelation 3:20 ESB
